Project champion organises football tournament in Kenya to raise awareness of trafficking

Hon. Jared Okelo MP organised a football tournament in the western region of Kenya to raise awareness of issues of human trafficking, in particular trafficking in or through sport. The tournament took place from 5-17 August, and included 88 teams from the five regions of Ahelo, Awasi, East Kano, Kabonyo and Kobura.

The MP stated that the purpose of the tournament was to build on information on emerging forms of trafficking he has explored through CPA UK's Modern Slavery Project. Following workshops Hon. Okelo MP attended in London and Ghana, the Kenyan representative sought to disseminate information and learning about the vice of modern forms of slavery to his constituents at the grassroots level, using football as a means to sensitise and educate his community.

He commented ahead of the final of the tournament: "We know many people end up in foreign nations and get abandoned there without any recourse. So that is why it is important that this information gets to my people here in the village."
