Modern Slavery Project explores opportunities with Kenya

10 September 2018

Darren Jones MP led a CPA UK delegation to Nairobi, Kenya for a two-day programme from 27-28 August. Meeting with parliamentarians and key stakeholders, the visit was an opportunity to explore potential areas for partnership with the Kenya Parliament as part of the CPA UK Modern Slavery Project.

On Day 1 of the visit, the delegation connected with HAART, an organisation committed to fight human trafficking in East Africa through creating awareness, assisting victims, advocacy and prosecuting offenders.

Discussion on Day 2 included the role of parliamentary committees in assessing current human trafficking legislation and its effectiveness. There was also a meeting with the Kenya Women Parliamentary Association (KEWOPA), a caucus of all women Parliamentarians in Kenya, where MPs shared experiences of modern slavery-related crimes in their constituencies.

Commenting on the visit, Darren Jones MP stated: "One of the great outcomes from my perspective has been helping to make the right introductions between politicians, NGOs and others."
