Modern slavery awareness campaign in Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria

28 March 2018

Legislative drafter, Michael Aniekan, and parliamentarian, Hon. Samuel Ikon MLA, who have been actively involved in the CPA UK Modern Slavery Project, recently organised an awareness raising campaign in their constituency: Akwa Ibom state, Nigeria.

The campaign comes shortly after Hon. Samuel Ikon MLA  presented a successful motion to the House of Representatives to investigate increasing cases of modern slavery, human trafficking, domestic servitude and forced labour involving Nigerians at home and abroad and to proffer solutions.

Mr. Ikon said the statistics released by a UN migration organisation publication in 2017 showed that a great percentage of Nigerian women and girls are trafficked out of the country for several reasons with an estimated 20 million persons recorded as victims of modern slavery in 2016.

Raising awareness and increasing education around modern slavery, human trafficking and forced labour is a key objective for Nigerian parliamentarians seeking to address these issues.
