CPA Africa Regional Conference pledges to tackle human trafficking

Parliamentarians at the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association Africa Regional Conference, have pledged to put in place measures aimed at curbing the increase in human trafficking on the continent.

The legislators meeting in Gaborone, Botswana for their 49th Meeting committed to enact tougher laws on human trafficking and modern-day slavery where the laws are non-existence and modify the existing laws to make them tougher.

These resolutions were reached following a topical discussion on the ‘agenda to combat human trafficking and modern-day slavery in Africa and the promotion of human rights’, on Monday, 20 August 2018.

Hon. Samuel Okon Ikon MNA (Nigeria), who has been actively involved in CPA UK's Modern Slavery Project - including a recent visit to Malawi - attended the meeting in Gaborone and stated afterwards:

"Having critically viewed and analysed the issues faced with Africa during the last visit to Malawi, adequate measures to combat the dare devil monster now called modern slavery must be implemented through a holistic action plan for Africa. And we must all move faster if we are to honour our commitment to ending forced labour, modern slavery, human trafficking and child labour."
